Gábor Subicz was born in 1983 in Debrecen, Hungary. He began his jazz education in 2002 as a pupil of Kornél Fekete-Kovács. He attended the ‘Kőbányai Zenei Stúdió’ school of performing arts for one year in 2003, than studied at the Liszt Ferenc University of Music from 2004. He graduated in 2008.
He won 3rd prize in the Hungarian Jazz Federation’s Combo contest as a member of Dezső Oláh’s band. In 2008 he won the 3rd prize, Special award from MOL Jazz Festival and the Audience’s choice award in the Hungarian National Jazz Trumpet Competition, and took the 1st prize as a member of Sándor Molnár’s group at the Jazz Festival Balatonfüred. He won the 1st prize in two categories (bigband composing and bigband arranging) in the Hungarian Jazz Federation’s Composer Competition in 2012, and took the 3rd prize in bigband composer category in 2014 . He won 1st prize in the 2nd European Bigband Composer Competition in Copenhagen in 2014.
Gábor plays in many Hungarian jazz and pop bands, and leads his own group, the Subtones since 2008. He is remarkably active as an arranger as well, he works with numerous Hungarian jazz and pop acts, and also writes music exclusively for the Modern Art Orchestra since 2008.
