MAO plays The Far East Suite by Ellington and Strayhorn

Some say that ‘The Far East Suite’ is probably the most beautiful item of Ellington’s and Strayhorn’s entire output. MAO is about to play the whole suite this time.

The album was inspired by a world tour undertaken by Ellington and his orchestra which included performances in the biggest cities of the Near East (like the appearing Delhi, Isfahan or Amad) and in Japan (suggested by the piece entitled ‘Ad Lib on Nippon’). The impressions of the journey had a great impact on the composers. A few months later they performed four new pieces in England, which they called ‘Expressions of the Far East’.

Out of these emerged ‘The Far East Suite’, recorded in the following year in New York City, becoming the final album to feature Strayhorn’s compositions which was released during his life.

MAO takes us to this wonderful musical journey, performing the suite in its original orchestration, presenting the whole composition for the very first time ever in Hungary.
