A Legendás Albumok sorozat koncertjein a jazztörténet szempontjából különösen jelentős lemezek anyagait hallhatjuk a Modern Art Orchestra előadásában. A koncertekkel a zenészek nem csupán tiszteletüket fejezik ki a jazzlegendák és műveik iránt – a Legendás Albumok mögötti műhelymunka fejlődési folyamat is egyben. A MAO muzsikusai tanulmányozzák és belsővé teszik az aktuális lemezanyag egészét, a zenei szerkezeteket és a hangszereléseket az előadások alkalmával érintetlenül hagyva. Minthogy a jazz nyelvezetének alapvető összetevői az improvizáció és a szólisztikus önkifejezés, a muzsikusok természetesen rögtönzött szólókat adnak elő a koncerteken. Legendás Albumok – Miles Davis: My Funny Valentine & Four and More

Ez a két lemez tulajdonképpen egy, hiszen egy koncerten készült felvételekről van szó. Nem ez az egyetlen furcsaság az egyébként öntörvényű Miles Davis pályáján, amit lemeztársaságok elkövettek művészi törekvései semmibe vételére. Ugyanis nem időrendben adták ki a két korongot, hanem előbb a lassú számokat, ami tényleg óriási siker volt, és csak két évvel a koncert elhangzása után, 1966-ban a ’Four’ and More -t. Davis pályáján köztes pillanatnak nevezhető ez az időszak, kvintettje összeállítása szempontjából mindenképpen, mert a legendás trombitás mellől ekkor George Coleman szaxofonos már búcsúzni készült. Viszont már együtt volt a legmagasabb csúcsokra felérkező ritmusszekció, Herbie Hancock zongoristával, Ron Carter bőgőssel és Tony Williams dobossal. A koncertre a nem sokkal korábban felavatott Filharmónia nagytermében került sor a New York-i Lincoln Centerben, amitől azt várták, mint később kiderült, joggal, hogy akkora presztízse lesz, mint a Carnegie Hallnak. A fiatal ritmusszekciónak ez volt az első igazi koncertje Davisszel, és nagyon izgultak. Ráadásul politikai jelentőséget adott a koncertnek, hogy fekete polgárjogi szervezetek javára szervezték, amit Davis és társai teljes meggyőződéssel támogattak. Viszont az nem lelkesítette a tagokat, hogy gázsi így nem jutott. Utólag persze senki nem bánt semmit, a My Funny Valentine Davistől még a CD korszakban is ezrével fogyott olcsó kiadásokban, lélegzetelállító tempókkal, friss összjátékokkal teli párja pedig gyűjtők kedvence.

These two records are actually one. They have been recorded at a single concert. Neglecting Davis’s artistic intentions is not the only sin that the recording industry committed against an otherwise very assertive artist and bandleader. The two records have not been issued representing the original order, as first only the slow and mid-tempo numbers were picked and released, becoming an immediate hit nevertheless. Only two years after the concert, in 1966 were the fast tunes issued on a separate record, entitled ’Four’ and More. This period can be considered an intermediate time in the career of Davis’s as a bandleader. The sax player of the band, George Coleman was about to depart from the legendary band. On the other hand the rhythm section consisting of pianist Herbie Hancock, bass player Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams has already joined the Davis quintet. The concert was scheduled in the newly inaugurated Philharmonic Hall of the Lincoln Center in New York City. Expectations, which proved well-founded in the meantime, were that the new concert venue would rise in prestige to the level of the Carnegie Hall. This was the first major concert for the young rhythm section with Davis, and they were quite nervous. In addition, the concert was given political significance, as it was a charity event for black civil rights organisations, a cause Davis and his associates wholeheartedly supported. Less motivating was the fact that the musicians did not get paid at all. No one really regretted anything in hindsight, Davis’s My Funny Valentine became one of the best selling records, sold in the thousands even in the cheap CD editions, while its counterpart, featuring breath-taking tempi and fresh instrumental interactions has become the favourite of collectors.
